The Phantom of the Hockey Arena

Lehigh Valley Phantoms at Hershey Bears
February 1, 2020 | Giant Center | Hershey, Pennsylvania
Bus Trip

All good things must inevitably come to an end. After ten trips in ten years to Giant Center, our unbeaten streak was ground to a halt under the weight of a 3-0 loss to the baby Flyers. Despite this we all had a fun time and enjoyed ourselves.

Trip Itinerary

The Caps Road Crew will be hitting the road by bus to the Giant Center to cheer on the Hershey Bears as they take on the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

The CRC has made arrangements for bus transportation and lower level group tickets. (A very limited number of tickets aside from those with bus transportation are available at this time.)

Current plans: We’ll have a pickup in northern Virginia at Springfield Metro station at 12:30pm and one in Maryland at the Shady Grove Metro station (off I-270 & ICC) at approximately 1:00pm. We should arrive in Hershey by 3:30pm for lunch at the Bear’s Den in the Hershey Lodge before heading over to the arena at 6pm to catch warmups before the 7pm drop of the puck. The CRC bus will be returning to the D.C. area as soon as possible following the game (expected arrival back at Shady Grove around midnight and Springfield Metro around 12:30am). Parking is available at both Metro stations and while the Metro will be open at the time for our departure, constantly changing WMATA schedules make their operation when we return questionable so plan accordingly. We are happy to assist with carpooling for those who need it.

All of our available spaces that include bus transportation will be $65 per person. No extra fees or money over the cost of the bus and game tickets will be charged. You may bring your own food and drink on the bus (coolers will be provided for your convenience). There is no smoking/vaping allowed on the bus and time constraints will most likely prevent us from making any stops on the way. The bus is equipped with a restroom, electric outlets, free WiFi, and video/TV units.

Please get your reservation in ASAP to guarantee your spot on the CRC bus! A reservation should be considered a firm commitment as it will be used to finalize others’ reservations. We will have space and tickets available for 55 people. To reserve your spot on the bus, or for more information, please e-mail info@capsroadcrew.com. (Please specify number of seats/tickets needed.) All inquiries are responded to in the order they are received.

All available spaces are currently claimed. New inquiries will be for the waitlist.

Heading back to the 'Burgh!

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins
March 7, 2020 | PPG Paints Arena | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Bus Trip

Our first trip to Pittsburgh since 2011 was one for the books! An early start made getting to the Steel Town easy as traffic was light and the travel was swift. Our Roadies were treated to some surprising hospitality as the PPG Paints Arena faithful were welcoming and friendly. The game was too, as the Caps took a 3-goal lead in the 1st period, and a 4th goal in the first minute of the 3rd on a beautiful short-handed play. The Pens staged a comeback scoring two in a row, but Holtby shut the door after that, allowing the Caps to finish off the home team with another goal later in the period. We left Pittsburgh victorious with a 5-2 final score.

The Devils in the details!

Washington Capitals at New Jersey Devils
February 22, 2020 | Prudential Center | Newark, New Jersey

History made! AGAIN! After witnessing Mario Lemieux being booted off the top 10 goal scoring list a month prior at Long Island, the Crew were treated to another Alex Ovechkin milestone as his 3rd period tally made him just the 8th player in NHL history to net 700 career goals. The score was tied at that point but the Caps still fell to the home team 3-2.

While our Roadies got to see the game in person, the Caps Prom 2020 viewing party was happening back home.

No sleep 'til Nassau!

Washington Capitals at New York Islanders
January 18, 2020 | Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum/NYCB Live | Long Island, New York

Our first trip of the new year took us back to the oldest building still active in the NHL, the Coliseum on Long Island. We began with a stellar pregame tailgate featuring delicious brunch offerings, including fresh local bagels, Tim Horton’s coffee and donuts, Bloody Marys with all the fixings, and mimosas! Well fed but hungry for hockey, we got to see Alex Ovechkin open the scoring in the 1st period, tying Mario Lemieux for 10th all-time in NHL goals! The Isles responded with their A-game, putting up 4 goals in a row through 2 periods. It looked bleak. The Caps pulled Braden Holtby for Ilya Samsonov to play the 3rd period and the Caps mounted a comeback the likes of which we hadn’t seen in a while, scoring 5 unanswered goals. Carl Hagelin broke the seal, followed shortly thereafter by another Ovechkin goal, which bounced Lemieux from his top 10 position on the NHL all-time goal scorers list! Tom Wilson tied it up and Jakub Vrana got the go-ahead goal with less than 4 minutes to play. When the Isles pulled former Capital Semyon Varlamov from the net for the extra attacker, Ovechkin made them pay with an empty netter hat trick, tying him with the great Steve Yzerman for 9th all-time! It was a crushing defeat for the the home team and a joy for all the Roadies in attendance.

Trip Itinerary

The Caps Road Crew will be traveling to Long Island to squeeze in one more visit to the remodeled Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum/NYCB Live as the Caps take on the Islanders at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 18, 2020. With construction underway on the new arena, we’re taking every opportunity to visit the site of so much hockey history.

Fire up the grills!

Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes
December 28, 2019 | PNC Arena | Raleigh, North Carolina
Bus Trip

The first trip of our 20th season was a fun one. A bus of Roadies made the trip to Raleigh where we met up with longtime Roadies Bert and Sparky (Herr Grillmeister), who had begun prepping the site for the feast. After a barbecue tailgate with cornhole and street hockey, we marched into the location of the very first CRC bus trip back in October of 2000! The Caps battled late, but the home team felt the Storm Surge that night, with a 6-4 triumph over the DC boys.

We expect to get to the arena in Raleigh by approximately 3pm, enjoy a few hours of food, fun, and street hockey, and have plenty of time to catch warmups before the 7pm game.

The bus will be returning home immediately following the game with an expected arrival back in Springfield around 2am. Parking is available at the Metro station however trains will have stopped running before our return. We are happy to assist with carpooling for those who need it.
